Radiographic (X-ray) Testing for Welds and Components
Radiographic testing (RT) reveals internal weld and base-material discontinuities using X-rays or gamma rays to produce interpretable images. Integrated Inspection LLC delivers mobile, code-compliant radiographic inspection services with fast, digital imaging and strict on-site radiation safety—keeping projects moving with practical, CWI- and ASNT-led coverage.
What Is Radiographic Testing (RT)?
Radiographic testing uses ionizing radiation to image the internal structure of welds and components. It is well-suited to detecting volumetric indications such as porosity, slag inclusions, and lack of fusion in many joint configurations and materials.
How RT Works in Practice
- Radiation source (X-ray or gamma) is positioned relative to the part and imaging plate/detector.
- Exposure is made per a qualified technique.
- Images are evaluated by qualified RT personnel per code acceptance criteria.
- Findings and dispositions are documented in a clear, code-based report.
Mobile Radiography: Go‑Anywhere Capability
Our mobile deployment model brings the crew, radiation safety controls, and imaging to your jobsite, shop, or laydown yard. We coordinate access with your safety team and schedule around production to minimize downtime.
How RT Works in Practice
Pre-job plan covering scope, technique, barricades, and site coordination
Rapid setup aligned to your shift windows
Image review on site to support immediate decisions when practical

Digital Radiography and Image Quality
We provide digital radiography NDT workflows for faster imaging, secure archiving, and streamlined review. Digital images enable quick sharing with QA/QC, engineering, and third-party stakeholders, helping accelerate repairs and turnover packages.
Faster Decisions, Better Records
- High-resolution images suitable for code interpretation
- Efficient electronic delivery and controlled retention
- Easy cross-team review for dispositioning and approvals
Safety and Radiation Controls On Site
Radiation protection is central to every exposure. Our teams maintain OSHA 30, radiation safety compliance, and work under your permit-to-work process while coordinating barricades and clear signage to protect adjacent work.
Planning, Barricades, and Compliance
- Job hazard analysis, time–distance–shielding application, and controlled areas
- Clear communication with supervision and affected trades
- Documentation of safety measures aligned with your EHS requirements
Code-Based Acceptance and Reporting
We evaluate images to the governing standard for your project, including AWS, ASME, API, AISC, MDOT, or DSA requirements. Reports clearly reference the code clauses, acceptance criteria, and film/digital identifiers to support traceability and closeout.
Deliverables You Receive
Code-based RT report with dispositions and locations
Image set (digital) indexed to weld or component IDs
Indication callouts, recommendations, and sign-off by qualified personnel
Where RT Fits vs. UT
RT excels at volumetric indication detection and provides a permanent image record. For certain geometries, thicknesses, or planar flaws, ultrasonic techniques can be advantageous.
- Considering UT instead? Compare options on our Ultrasonic Testing page.
- When required by spec, we can sequence RT first, then apply supplemental UT, MT, PT, or VT per your ITP.
Applications We Inspect
RT is commonly selected for:
- Pipeline and process piping circumferential welds
- Pressure vessel shell, head, and nozzle welds
- Structural tube and critical fabrication weldments
- Boiler tubes, headers, and repairs
- Castings and critical components where volumetric flaws are a concern
We support shop and field environments, integrating with your QA/QC workflows, outage windows, and turnover documentation.

FAQs
Do you provide digital X-ray and mobile radiography?
Yes. We deliver mobile RT and offer digital radiography NDT workflows for rapid imaging, review, and archiving.
What types of welds or components do you X-ray?
We commonly perform x-ray weld inspection on piping girth welds, pressure vessel welds, boiler/structural fabrications, and castings. We can also coordinate gamma ray weld testing when the setup or material demands it.
How do you manage radiation safety on site?
Each exposure follows a pre-job plan with barricades, time–distance–shielding controls, signage, and communication with affected trades. We adhere to your permit process and applicable regulations.
What codes do you work under?
We work under AWS, ASME, API, AISC, MDOT, and DSA requirements as specified in your project documents. Reports reference the governing acceptance criteria.
How quickly are images and reports delivered?
For many projects, preliminary interpretations are available the same shift, with final reports in 24–48 hours depending on volume and access.
What does radiographic testing cost?
Pricing depends on scope, access, safety requirements, technique, and mobilization. Share your ITP and weld counts for a tailored quote.
